County chapter of CASA contact Ray

someone from GA CASA call

President.

I spoke to Director Bill McCorkle of
DFCS to get a heads up on the
direction of the new year.  Many of you
may already know Deputy Director
Susan Denny accepted a job promotion
as Director of Douglas County.  Her
last day with us was June 1st.  I asked
Bill about any future plans to fill the
now vacant position. He told me that
due to restructuring the position of
Deputy Director has been dissolved.
Hopefully down the road he hopes to
hire someone to help with some of the
responsibilities.

Angel House is still in a waiting
pattern and not currently open to
house children.  Every one hopes to see
it open very soon!

The current number of foster homes in
Coweta County is 53 of which about
half are active homes.  The current
number of children in foster care is
224. This last year around 20 children
have been successfully adopted with at
least 3 more pending.

The current number of CPS workers is
18. There are 5 investigators, 5 in
ongoing investigations, and 8 as foster
care workers. Please note that the
Division of adult protective services
will be changing to the division of
aging services.

In early July new financial policies
will be sent out to all foster parents.
There will be an additional $100.00
available from county funds for school
age children’s back to school clothes.
( K4-12 Grade)

Money for camp programs are
available this summer, please check
with your case worker for prior
approval.  There is a total of  $252.00
available per child.

Please feel free to direct any questions
or concerns to Bill McCorckle at any
time.
CASA . . .
What is it and how does it help children
in foster care?

In 1976, Superior Court
Judge David Soukup of
Seattle, Washington,
observed a recurring problem of too little
information in the courtroom upon which
to base a decision about a child’s future.
He rose funding to recruit and train
community volunteers to obtain
information and speak on behalf of
children in court (court appointed special
advocates.)

In 1977, a CASA pilot program was
formed based on Judge Soukup’s idea. In
1982, the National CASA Association
was established to direct CASA’s
emerging national presence. 41 CASA
programs serve 95 GA counties and 39
of the 49 judicial circuits.

Coweta County is the newest addition to
this statistics. In early January Judge
McNab approved CASA to come to
Coweta County. Mr. Ray Walker of the
Golden Kiwanis Club has been working
with others interested in seeing the
project get started since last December.
May 18th, 04 there was a public meeting
for those interested in learning more
about CASA. Lori Derhammer of GA
CASA told about the history of GA
CASA and the many benefits currently
being received for abused children.

Tracy Jones, Dir Troup Co CASA was
the main speaker. The Troup CASA has
34 volunteers and a budget of about
130K year. They have come a long way
from a 15K first year budget. There were
about 30 people in attendance. The
Newnan CASA board of Directors will
consist of approx 15 volunteers, and
hopes to meet soon to go over a budget.

Qualifications to be a CASA volunteer
are as follows:
Prior to training, each prospective
volunteer will fill out an application at his
or her local CASA program. Included in
this application is a minimum of 3
reference checks. Prospective volunteers
may not be chosen for CASA even if they
pass a criminal background check.

Prior to training, each prospective
volunteer will undergo fingerprinting for
the purposes of conducting a criminal
background check. If a background
check is returned with offenses that
disqualify you from volunteering you will
not be able to volunteer for a CASA
program.

Once training begins you will be trained
in a variety  of subjects for a total of 40
hours, including court observation. The
training sessions may vary depending on
the schedule the program has created but
it generally lasts 4-6 weeks and classes
are usually about 3 hours
WIC Reminder
Most foster children
under the age of five will
qualify for WIC.  WIC
provides specific age
appropriate food items.
(This includes baby
formula)
