Volume 2, Issue 8                             PO Box 72108 Newnan, GA  30271                                           August, 2004

Recently Mr. Ike Hudson, who is an
attorney in Newnan, approached
each Superior Judge in Coweta
County about shortening the waiting
period for foster parents adopting
children presently in their care.

The law states that after petitioning
the court for adoption you must wait
45 days before obtaining a court
date to finalize the process.  There is
a loophole for special
circumstances.  Mr. Hudson used
that stipulation to ask that foster
parents be given special
consideration since the child(ren)
has/have been in the adoptive
parents’ care already.

Every Judge agreed.  If any of you
have an adoption case in the future,
make sure that your lawyer knows
that there is no need to wait 45 days
after petitioning the court for
adoption.  We all know how long we,
foster parents, have to wait for all of
the court dates, panel visits, and
paperwork.  Hopefully, this small
improvement will shave off a little bit
of that long road to finalization.

Thank you Mr. Ike Hudson for your
help in achieving this goal.

and ready to go the night before.

Create a homework center. Stock
with extra crayons and supplies
needed to complete homework.
Make sure it's not near a TV.

Lay out clothes the night before.
Remember kids need to make as
many decisions as possible. Avoid
power struggles by letting them
make small decisions. (continued

Senator Mitch Seabaugh
by Amy Richardson

Senator Seabaugh is scheduled to
attend our August FPA meeting.
For those of you who may not be
aware, Mr. Seabaugh is up for re-
election this year.  Before he comes
to speak to us, let us familiarize
ourselves with the Senator’s
background.  The state’s web site
was used for research at
www.legis.state.ga.us/.

He is a republican who was elected
to the senate in 2000.  The Senator
graduated from Southern Arkansas
University with a BBA majoring in
Accounting.  He currently works
with Oddo Brothers CPA.  While in
the senate, Mr. Seabaugh has been
working to involve more citizens in
his district in the political process.
If re-elected, he plans to work on
improvements in Education, Quality
Health Care Access, and Public
Safety.

On a personal note, the Senator is
married to Leah Seabaugh, and
they have two children together,
Karen, 20, and Ryan, 17.
Originating from Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, the Senator now resides
in the Sharpsburg area.  They are
active members of the SonRise
Baptist Church in East Coweta
County.  Golf and reading are
leisure activities, in which Senator
Seabaugh takes pleasure.

Please come out to hear the
Senator speak no matter what your
political preferences.  We need to
make Mr. Seabaugh aware of our
concerns and needs at the
government level as foster parents.

We need to embrace the Senator as
a partner with the Foster Parents
Association of Coweta County and
the Department of Family and
Children Services.  The more
support we have the better strength
our association will have in the
community to successfully effect
positive change for children in
foster care.
