Hurricane Katrina
Reggie of Go Kart World in Newnan has
turned his place of business into a
collection site for food, diapers, clothing,
and water.   Evacuees can get a voucher
from DFCS or from DHR worker Martha
Donnaway who will be on site, the
vouchers will be for those listed items. If
you would like to contact Go Kart World or
would like to make a donation call 770-
253-5376.

Sandra Coucher at the Newnan Housing
Authority will be a contact person for
matching up people who have housing to
donate to those in need.

People looking for work are being
directed to the Department of Labor. Any
evacuee who lost his or her job because
of this tragedy is eligible to file for
unemployment.

Currently we have 40 people staying here
in the Newnan Shelter, and many families
that have taken in family fro our
neighboring states.

Coweta county schools are trying to make
the transition of student in to the
classroom as easy as possible.  The
schools are not requiring re immunization
of student s and are supplying necessary
school supplies for students.

future.

Katrina has given us all a chance to
reevaluate our priorities and maybe even
our standards of living. Don’t loose this
opportunity to learn something about
your self or others and the courage it
takes and the will to survive.

Our local DFCS agency has been hard
at work since the beginning of this
natural disaster. Many of the
caseworkers and personnel are Red
cross/ shelter trained to assist people in
need.  While the Red Cross has cut
training hours to help increases numbers
of trained personnel to help, there are
many more victims than volunteers.
Coweta county DFCS was open
throughout the Labor Day Holiday
weekend to help process paper work for
evacuees.

Many people from the 3 affected states
have been able to apply for Food
Stamps and if they qualified receive
benefits and an EBT card there in the
office.  People who were already
receiving benefits could update
information and have their EBT loaded
for use, however there still is process
time of about 24-48 hours. In the
meantime people received food vouchers
that they could take to the local food
pantry. These benefits will be good for a
4-month period and then will be
reviewed. The agency is also taking
Medicaid applications and has made
arrangements for outside organizations
to help with the cost of medication
temporarily until the medic aide is
approved.
